 Curriculum Description                Curriculum

The Early Childhood Associate curriculum prepares individuals to work with children from infancy through middle childhood in diverse learning environments. Students will combine learned theories with practice in actual settings with young children under the supervision of qualified teachers.

Course work includes child growth and development; physical/nutritional needs of children; care and guidance of children; and communication skills with parents and children. Students will foster the cognitive/language, physical/motor, social/emotional, and creative development of young children.

The Teacher Associate Concentration offers students the opportunity to focus their education on children three years of age through adolescence.  Specifically, students learn methods of teaching reading, writing, and math and how to work with children during elementary and middle school years.

Students may pursue an Associates Degree, Diploma, and or Certificate.

Careers                                                  Careers

Graduates are prepared to plan and implement developmentally appropriate programs in early childhood settings. Employment opportunities include child development and child care programs, preschools, public and private schools, recreational centers, Head Start programs, and school-age programs.

Students in the two year associate degree program participate in MCC's Co-op program that combines classroom learning experiences with one or more semesters of employment while completing their degrees.  The professional work experience awards academic credit toward graduation and is closely related to the student's academic program of study.  Co-op education is considered an integral part of the learning process as it enhances the student's academic knowledge, personal development, and professional development.  Early Childhood Associate Degree students are required to complete a one semester of co-op working experience in a licensed childcare facility, public school classroom, or agency serving children and families.

Career planning and placement assistance is offered by the college and the Employment Security Commission.  Click here for more information.
