2006-08 College Catalog

          2008-09 College Catalog NEW

Applicants for admission to Martin Community College are encouraged to complete admission requirements as early as possible prior to their initial enrollment. High school students should apply during their senior year, unless they are applying as Dual Enrollment students. Others may apply at any time preceding their enrollment.

Admission to a curriculum program is based on criteria developed to ensure students have a reasonable chance of success in their program. When evaluations of applicants’ placement test scores indicate a lack of readiness in English, math, and/or reading, applicants will be required to enroll in the appropriate developmental classes as determined by the developmental prerequisites of their program. Selected allied health programs may require that certain prerequisites be met prior to students being admitted to those particular programs. A high school diploma or equivalent GED is required for admission to a curriculum program.

The college application for admission and college catalog are available online. The college catalog is an Adobe Acrobat PDF file and can be viewed, printed, or download. Please refer to the college catalog for specific admissions requirements. Click on the links below.

Applicants seeking to be admitted and enrolled to curriculum programs are required to:

  • Complete an official application and return it to the Student Services Office prior to enrollment.

  • Have an official high school transcript showing graduation or GED score report as well as official transcripts of all college work sent to the Registrar at the College prior to enrollment. However, students who fail to submit GED score reports or transcripts prior to registration will have the first semester of enrollment to meet this requirement.

    NOTE: Veterans who transfer from other institutions must have ALL transcripts submitted and evaluated by the Registrar before they are eligible for certification for educational benefits. Veterans who have taken the GED tests must have made a minimum score of 225 to be eligible for certification.

  • Take any required placement test (assessment) as part of the enrollment process for advising, guidance, and course placement purposes. Placement test scores are valid for two years. Applicants can test two times in one year as long as they are not enrolled in the course they placed into. Applicants may have the placement test waived as stipulated below when verified by official transcripts/score reports received in the Registrars Office.

  • Meet with their advisor and register for curriculum classes.

High school students 16 years or older may be admitted to appropriate courses at Martin Community College under the following conditions:

  1. Must complete and submit a Martin Community College Application for Admission and a dual enrollment petition form with the appropriate signatures prior to registration.

  2. Must be enrolled in at least two block schedule classes or half of a school day in his/her high school, with the exception of summer semester, and be making satisfactory progress toward graduation as determined by the school principal or headmaster.

diamond.jpg (805 bytes)  Special Credit Students

Special credit students must officially apply for admission. This classification is designed for students who enroll in curriculum classes without declaring a major program of study. Special credit students will be permitted to earn a maximum of 18 credit hours before fulfilling all admission requirements (take placement tests and have transcript(s) submitted). Special credit students wishing to enroll in English or math courses must take the appropriate placement tests before registering in order to be placed in the appropriate level courses. Testing may be waived for students who can be placed in the appropriate courses by documenting previous college credit. If special credit students select majors, applicable credits earned as special credit students will be applied toward their course requirements for graduation. NOTE: Special credit students are not automatically enrolled as auditing a course. Therefore, special credit students desiring to audit should inform their advisor of their plans to audit a course(s) at the time of registration.

Martin Community College operates on the semester system. All students must officially register and pay fees during the pre-registration period or registration period scheduled at the beginning of each semester. Students are eligible to register after their files are complete with the necessary admission data. Students who apply late and are in the process of completing admission requirements at the time they report for registration will be tested and/or allowed to register for their first semester without meeting all admission requirements. However, it will be necessary for new students, other than special credit students, to meet all admission requirements before registering for their second semester of enrollment. Pre-registration and registration dates are listed in the Academic Calendar.

Any changes in schedule involving entrance into classes must be made or adjusted during the first five school days of the semester. Students wishing to drop classes or withdraw from school should complete the official forms by the end of the eleventh week of the semester, or its equivalent during an abbreviated session, as published in the Academic Calendar in order that they not receive a grade of F for the course or courses. In making either of the above changes, students should complete the following steps:

  1. Obtain a Registration Change Form from their advisor or the Student Services Office;

  2. Complete this form listing each course to be added or dropped in the appropriate section of the form and obtain the signature(s) of the course instructor(s);

  3. Sign this form and then have your advisor sign it;

  4. Have this form processed through the Student Services Office; and

  5. Report to the Business Office for payment of additional fees, if applicable.

Students who are compelled to withdraw due to extenuating circumstances after the eleventh-week deadline may request a hearing to see if their case merits special consideration. (See Due Process Hearing.)

diamond.jpg (805 bytes)  Auditing Courses

Students who wish to audit a course must officially register for that course. Auditors do not receive credit. Even though it is not required, auditors are encouraged to attend classes regularly, participate in class discussions, and take all examinations. Tuition for auditors is the same as that for credit students. A grade of "AU" with no credit hours or quality points is recorded on the student's record. The decision to register as an auditor, or for credit, must be made by the end of the ADD period as published in the Academic Calendar and clearly noted on the Student Class Schedule Form or Registration Change Form. Audited hours cannot be used in calculating the amount of financial aid (Pell Grants, DVA, etc.) which students receive. NOTE: Students may not audit a course more than two times.
