Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET)
Frequently asked questions about BLET
BLET is required for potential law enforcement officers. The Martin Community College Basic Law Enforcement Training course is a rigorous program stressing professionalism, academic achievement, discipline, and physical fitness. It is designed to prepare the cadet mentally and physically to function successfully as a law enforcement officer and requires a total commitment for successful completion. Expectations are high and trainees must carry out the Academy's daily regimen in strict compliance with established guidelines. The program is accredited by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission. Currently we offer night classes that meet on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights from 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. or so. Classes are also held on alternating weekends from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The cost of books is about $550.00 and uniforms will cost about $100.00 for the first part of the course. The next BLET class starts in September. If you think you can handle it download an application packet. Clean criminal record: Applicants may not enroll with any felony convictions regardless of date of offense. A misdemeanor offense does not automatically disqualify an applicant. Applicants will have to have a criminal history evaluation by the school director prior to enrollment. Age: Applicants must be 20 years of age by the first day of class. Proof of age will be required at the time of registration. A waiver may be obtained at 19 years of age but the cadet must be 20 before the date of the state exam. Education: Cadet candidates must have a high school diploma or a GED from an accredited school. GED or High School by correspondence course is not accepted.
