There are 35 blocks of instruction the cadet must complete before he/she is allowed to graduate. Here is a brief description of each block. Orientation- A general overview of the Basic Law Enforcement Training Program. Physical Fitness Training- Includes 3 Physical Assessments, eight hours of lecture on physical fitness and wellness, and 34 hours of physical training. Ethics for Professional Law Enforcement - Teaches the cadet the ethics required of a a police officer. Also presents ethical dilemmas that may occur in an officers career. Arrest, Search & Seizure / Constitutional Law - Teaches the basics of Arrest, Search, and Seizure. Elements of Criminal Law - Teaches the Elements of Crimes that must be present in order to charge and convict a person of a crime. Communication Skills for Law Enforcement Officers -Teaches the officer how to communicate with people they will deal with in their careers. Law Enforcement Radio Procedures & Information Systems- Teaches the officer how to use a radio and other communications equipment properly. Field Notetaking & Report Writing - Teaches the basics of notetaking and report writing. Students will be given several scenarios that will require writing a police report. Interviews: Field & In-Custody- Cadets are introduced to the art of Interviewing and Interrogating. Cadets are given several scenarios to complete. The scenarios are videotapes and played back for critique. Subject Control / Arrest Techniques- Cadets are taught the basics of Use of Force law and policy and are taught basic techniques of Arrest and Control of subjects. Juvenile Laws & Procedures - This is an introduction to Juvenile Law and how to deal with juvenile offenders. Fingerprinting & Photographing Arrestees- This is an introduction into processing arrested persons. Dealing with Victims & the Public- An introduction into dealing with the public, how to explain the court system to a victim who may have never had any contact with the criminal justice system in the past and dealing with special people. Firearms - This is a basic firearms course that teaches the fundamental of marksmanship. Criminal Investigation - A course on basic criminal investigation that give the cadet the basics of dealing with a crime scene. Several scenarios are given two of which are major crime scenes that offer a valuable experience to the cadet. ABC Laws & Procedures- Teaches the basics of Alcoholic Beverage Control Laws of North Carolina. Motor Vehicle Law - A basic course in Motor Vehicle laws to include vehicle licensing, drivers licensing, and enforcing rules of the road. Law Enforcement Driver Training - An exciting course that teaches cadets how to properly respond to incidents safely. This course ends with practical exercises in which the cadet is forced to drive a police vehicle under a variety of stressful conditions. Crime Prevention Techniques- Teaches the cadet a number of strategies for Crime Prevention. Includes steps for completing a security survey. First Responder- This is a course in basic patient assessment and patient care for those persons labeled First Responders. Domestic Violence Response- Teaches the cadet how to safely respond to a Domestic Violence situation. This course stresses officer safety and has several scenarios the cadet must safely defuse. Controlled Substances - An introduction to Controlled Substance law. Includes information on case development and search warrants. Techniques of Traffic Law Enforcement - Teaches the cadet the basics of Traffic Law Enforcement. Learning is tested by participation is several traffic stops. In-Custody Transportation -Teaches the cadet methods for safely transporting prisoners. Traffic Crash Investigation- A basic course on investigating traffic collisions. Explosives and Hazardous Materials Emergencies- Teaches the cadet about safely responding to Hazardous Materials Emergencies. Individuals with Mental Illness & Mental Retardation- Teaches the cadet issues on dealing with persons who fit these categories. Crowd Management- Teaches the cadet how to participate in Riot situations. The cadet will be exposed to tear gas during this class. Candidates are reminded that they must present the OC Tear Gas letter to their physician during their physical. Preparing for Court & Testifying in Court- The cadet is taught how to prepare cases for court and how to testify in court. All cadets will participate in a mock trial. Patrol Techniques - Cadets are taught how to conduct their patrols, how to prepare for duty and how to respond to various incidents. Sheriff’s Responsibilities: Detention Duties- Cadets are taught duties that may be required for working in a jail. Sheriff’s Responsibilities: Court Duties - Cadets are introduced to Bailiff duty. Civil Process - Cadets are taught the basics of serving civil papers. Rapid Deployment- Cadets are taught the basics of responding to crisis situations in schools and other public places. Anti-Terrorism - A basic class in anti-terrorism.
