Continuing Education


t.gif (142 bytes)he purpose of the Division of Continuing Education is to deliver non-credit courses to the general public, government agencies, and business and industry. The Division of Continuing Education strives to meet the needs of the community at large and designs and develops training programs to meet specific needs.

Any adult 18 years of age or older or a high school graduate may register for a Continuing Education class. In some circumstances, a student between 16 and 18 years of age may enroll with the approval of appropriate public or private school officials as a student with special needs. Additionally, an individual between 16 and 18 years of age, who has officially withdrawn from school may enroll with proper documentation.

Pre-registration is required for Continuing Education extension classes. To pre-register for classes in the Williamston area call (252) 792-1521 or (252) 794-2924; for classes in the Windsor area call the Bertie Campus at (252) 794-4861.

Students register for extension classes at the first class meeting. Basic Skills classes follow an open enrollment procedure which allows students to enroll at any time.

A schedule of classes is published and mailed to every post office box holder and address in the College’s service area prior to the beginning of each semester. Classes are also advertised through the local news media.

Many Continuing Education classes and services are provided on the main campus in Williamston and/or the Bertie campus in Windsor. Additional classes are taught at off-campus sites in the College’s service area. Classes may be organized when a sufficient number of students indicate a need or interest in having a class brought to a particular location. See Class Schedule or contact the Division of Continuing Education.

The registration fee for Community Service classes is $35. The fee structure for Occupational classes is as follows: $50.00 for 0-10 hrs.; $55.00 for 11-30 hrs.; $60.00 for 31-100 hrs.; $65.00 for 101 hrs. up. There is a $7.50 fee for those individuals taking the General Educational Development (GED) Test. However, no fees are required for Basic Skills or HRD classes. Individuals 65 years of age or older are exempt from paying a registration fee, unless they are enrolling in self-supporting courses. Special extension training programs for volunteer firemen, local fire department personnel, volunteer and local rescue and lifesaving department personnel, and local law enforcement officers are also exempt from the registration fee. Fees for self-supporting classes will be determined by the content and length of each class and will be paid by all students. Tuition for all programs is determined by the North Carolina General Assembly and is subject to change.

Continuing Education occupational extension courses may carry CEU credit. The Continuing Education Unit is a uniform standard of measurement for participation in non-credit occupational courses. CEUs are awarded on the basis of one CEU per ten contact (class) hours.

The Division of Continuing Education maintains a permanent record on each student who takes a continuing education course. The records are available to students upon request. Students needing a transcript should contact the Continuing Education Office.

College credit is not given for completion of continuing education courses; however, certificates of completion are awarded for some of the courses. Diplomas, certifications, licenses, or other forms of recognition are awarded by certain agencies outside the College for successful completion of specially designated courses.
