This course is scheduled from September 18, 2026, through December 8, 2026, Tuesday and Thursday, from 8:00am-5:00pm at the Martin Community College - Bertie Campus, 409 Granville Street, Windsor, NC 27983.

Course Summary

This 165-hour course is designed to prepare graduates to provide personal care and perform basic nursing skills for the elderly and other adults. Emphasis on aging process including mental, social and physical needs of the elderly, patient's rights, nutrition management, elimination procedures, safe environment, restorative services, personal and special care procedures and activities, human body structure and function and related common disease/disorders, communication and documentation, death and dying, and roles of the nursing assistant and health team members. A skill/competency evaluation is required. The course includes class, laboratory and clinical learning experiences. Upon satisfactory completion of the course and skill/competency evaluation, the graduate is eligible to apply for listing as a Nurse Aide I by the N.C. Division of Facility Services.

 PLEASE NOTE: Students cannot miss any more than 8 hours of this course. Scrubs are required as well as drug screen and background checks. Books are ordered through Bookstore. This information is reviewed on the first day of the course. At the end of the course there is an additional fee for state testing. If students want to order books before class starts and get a head start on their drug and background checks, you can get that information from the director. 

Requirements

Students wishing to register for the Nursing Aide Level 1 class must provide the following: 

 1.     Students must provide one of the following picture IDs:

·        Valid Driver’s License (current, non-expired)

·        DMV Identification Card

·        Military ID Card

·        Passport

 2.     Signed Social Security Card (signed & cannot be laminated).  Important: If a student does not have a signed social security card, they DO NOT QUALIFY to take the North Carolina Nurse Aide Exam to be certified & listed of the NC Nurse Aide Registry

 3.     Proof of one of the following: 

·        High School diploma or High School Equivalent Diploma (HiSet or GED)

·        Current enrollment in High School Equivalency Program

·        Current High School students, with minimum of 2.8 GPA

·        Current College Enrollment

·        Associate's degree or higher

4.     Students wishing to register for the Nursing Aide Level 1 class must provide copy of the following immunizations: 

·        Negative TB Skin Test (a 2-step is required unless receving annual testing for employment) OR QuantiFERON Gold blood test.

·        Tetanus (within the past 10 years)

·        Hepatitis B (Titer or signed declaration form)

·        Flu Shot (Flu shot is only required for Fall courses, Students will be required to get Flu shots before starting clinical rotation)

·        MMR immunization or titer

·        Varicella immunization or titer

·        COVID vaccine - (OPTIONAL)               

Universal Requirements:

• Background & Drug Screening: All students complete a background check and drug screening through CastleBranch.  Instructions will be given on the first day of class. Students will pay the CastleBranch vendor directly for this service. Any person that appears on a sex offender registry will be removed from the course per NC State Statute. THIS IS A 3RD PARTY VENDOR AND YOU MUST PAY THIS DIRECTLY TO THE VENDOR. THIS FEE AMOUNT IS NOT INCLUDED BELOW.

• Uniform:

  1. Students must supply their own uniforms.

  2. Students are required to attend class, lab and clinical shifts in uniform. Scrub requirements are white scrub tops, and red scrub bottoms. Shoes must be closed toe and closed heel with no holes (such as crocs for example).
